This year, the world of technology and mobile phones will be revolutionized by the launch of new models by Samsung and Huawei, with their flagship models, the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ and the Huawei P20 and P20 Pro. These models were recently made available to the public and have a slightly lower price compared to Apple’s iPhone X. The biggest changes these companies are doing in the smartphone world is concerning the camera and its functionalities.
Huawei P20
This new flagship model by Huawei was co-engineered with Leica. This centenary company has a focus on optics and high end cameras and this not the first time that the two brands work together on a project. Huawei’s P series has always been a pioneer of smartphone photography and this time, the brand wants to be on the lead! Just like the iPhone X, the P20 has a 82% screen-to-body ratio, meaning that your experience will be even more instinctive and amusing.
Best features:
• Leica Triple Camera: 40MP RGB + 20MP + 8MP|
• 2160p 30fps Video
• 960 fps Super Slow Motion
• 24 MP Front Camera
• 4000mAh Battery
Samsung Galaxy S9
In the past few years, Samsung has been one of the top sellers of smartphones all over the world. Its top sellers are usually their flagship models, known for the quality of the materials used and its high performance. The new Galaxy S9, like the two previous models, comes equipped with a edge-to-edge curved screen, occupying more of the phone´s body, just leaving space for the camera and a proximity sensor. This phone comes fitted with AKG Stereo speakers, and the addition of dolby atmos gives Galaxy S9’s users a theater-like audio experience. Another characteristic that makes this phone stand out is its live translation feature, which uses the camera to instantly read and translate what your eyes can’t!
Best features:
• F1.5 Aperture Mode
• Face Recognition and Iris Scan
• 2160p 60fps Video
Which phone is the best option?
Both of these smartphones make use of the Android 8.0 (Oreo) and roughly have the same size and weight. The most evident differences between the two is the battery capacity. Unfortunately, the Samsung Galaxy S9 is fitted with a 3000 mAh battery, which, considering its performance and screen size, should not be enough to last for a whole day. On the other side, Huawei’s P20 has a 4000 mAh battery, which should be more than enough for your daily needs. To compare, Apple’s iPhone X comes fitted with a 2716 mAh battery, which is usually seen as one of its main drawbracks.
In case you are looking for the smartphone with the best camera(s) in the market, you must choose the Huawei. On the back of the phone, you’ll find a triple camera, with 40 MP, 20 MP and 8 MP definition, which overpowers Samsung’s cameras. The P20 also has a 24MP front (selfie) camera, a big difference from Samsung’s 8 MP. In case you are looking for a smartphone for amateur filmmaking, the Samsung is probably the best option, seeing that at 2160p definition it shoots at 60 frames per second, double the amount of the P20 and a significant difference if you’re looking to get the smoothest videos possible.
In terms of RAM (Random-access Memory), the P20 has 6GB and the Samsung, 4GB. This makes a big difference if you’re planning on you using your phone to play games or to run a lot of apps at the same time, as this memory is used to store programs and data that are in current use, which can then be quickly reached by the device’s processor.
After having an in-depth look at the two smartphones and its specifications, we think that the Huawei P20 is probably the best choice, if we consider the fact that it has a 33% bigger battery, a superior camera and more RAM and overall, a better value for money.
